I like up close shots like this because I had no idea what it was until I read your description. I think the photo may look better with a solid background. The pattern one distracts from the acorn itself.
Do read through the syllabus and watch the video I posted a few days back.... the first assignment is designed to get you to think about composition and light/focal point in an intentional way. We will build on that as we progress through each assignment.
