Hello Fellow Photographers,

My name is Zephaniah.  I am a junior in the day program and am taking Digital Photography II.  My reason for continuing on is to learn to use my “camera” better.  I put the camera in quotations because I cannot afford to buy a good digital camera at this point in my life, but have the desire to explore photography further. So, for now, I am using my Samsung Galaxy S8+.

Last semester my step-dad passed away from cancer.  I spent a lot of time in the hospital and at hospice.  One thing I noticed was the walls.  There are pictures everywhere.  The more time I spent roaming the halls, the more I realized there are many ways to take a photo.  I read the following quote one late night: “Black and white are the colors of photography. To me, they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.” – Robert Frank.  The quote inspired me to move away from color to black and white, the use of shadows, light, and balancing the two.

Another style I was drawn to is Macro photos.  I find them fascinating because in some pictures the details are so real, the photo seems alive.  In others, you have to really look to figure out what the subject of the photo actually is.  This technique is fascinating to me.

I want to learn how to look at the world as if every moment is one to photograph.

“A camera is a tool for learning how to see without a camera.” – Dorothea Lange

  1. Nice quotations… Reading and reflecting on the words of important photographers is such an important thing to do at this stage in your photographic education. I look forward to seeing what you'll be coming up with this term.
